Attention Shoppers: Here Are the Rules on How to Behave in Walmart!

We ALL Contribute to the Enviornment in Which We Live:

Walmart gets a bad rap with the general public. If you have been inside one recently, you will quickly notice it is a vulgar demonstration of the worst example of human behavior known to man. Critics are quick to target rude Associates and Employees as the cause of the breakdown in civility beyond the blue and white sign. However, after spending my fair share of time as a shopper, it is no wonder why Associates are less then cheery in their work.

Rude behavior is bad for everyone. It hurts sales, hardens Associates, makes everyone less cooperative, and contributes to a negative outlook on humanity in general. Sadly, human beings need rules of how to conduct themselves in Walmart and the public in general to improve this necessary experience for everyone.

THE RULES:

  • 20 Items or less MEANS 20 items or less! Getting into the express lane with 21 items, forgivable.. getting into the express lane with 50 items.. HEINOUS.
  • When you are shopping.. don't leave your cart in the middle of the isle. Don't park your cart on one side to block the other while pretending not to notice there are 10 people trying to get by you. Sure, you may be "special", but you are not the only Walmart shopper.
  • We all run into friends and family in Walmart from time to time. If you have a family reunion, don't do it in the middle of isles or major intersections. Move it to a less crowded area of the store.
  • If someone is selecting an item in the area you would like to shop from.. wait your turn. Do not reach across strangers with your donkey breath and body odor. It is incredibly rude to violate the personal space of others, even if you think your shopping needs are more urgent than other shoppers.
  • Would the five extra steps it take to return your cart to the proper return area really kill you? Your laziness drives up prices for all of us.
  • Walmart is not a play ground for your sticky children to run rampant. No one finds it "cute" but a negative reflection on the parents.
  • Some people bring the entire extended family to shop at Walmart. Families and groups of four or more would be kind to walk in single file.
  • Walmart does offer restrooms to their customers free of charge. Considerate shoppers would be kind to remember this rather than passing gas in the isles. No one thinks your toxic emissions are funny.
  • Clothes are not optional at Walmart- they are required. No one wants to see your butt crack and other body parts.
  • Enter Walmart under the sign that says "Enter". Exit Walmart under the sign that says "Exit". While it sounds simple, do not be so surprised when people give you dirty looks while you block all incoming shoppers with your full cart.
  • And the most volatile of all... The worst display of bad behavior in Walmart is watching you beat your child senseless and yell at it for crying. YOU brought the child to the store tired and hungry.

Walmart and society would be a much better place in general if shoppers would be respectful of each other and remember these simple rules of civility. We all contribute to the enviornment in which we live.

Oh how hysterical! Funny that all of those rules are so true and sorry that so few know or abide by them. One would think that common sense would dictate proper behavior out in public. Maybe that is what concerns me the most. You listed things that everyone should know but do not! And make a comment to the rude shopper with 50 things in the 20 item express line and you will see some really bad behavior take place. The Walmart employees can't say anything to them, but I can! And do.

Hey Tammy, I haven't a clue what you're talking about with this hub, except for the clothing is optional. All the rest I've not run across in my local WalMart stores. Tammy,

This was laugh-out-loud funny! I had an intellectual discussion with my boyfriend a few days ago regarding Wal*Mart vs. Target. We sometimes go to both stores during the same shopping trip since they're only a few blocks apart. We disagreed about which store we liked the best.

tammyswallow profile image

Thanks Daisy.. I do that too. Target is "pretty" but you can't get all the things you need there. I love their toys and kids clothes. I wish they had more and I would ditch Walmart. I appreciate you stopping and reading!

I refuse to go to Walmart unless I am truly desperate. I hate their parking lots, the exit door is on the wrong side, the cashiers are rude and un-helpful. I could go on and on. I can't say that I have ever had one good experience at a Walmart. I don't understand why people shop there.

I do agree that there are some really strange and 'sticky' people (as well as children) that put on a free show while you shop. Maybe that is the attraction?

This should be posted on all entrance doors to Wal-Marts nationwide. I especially like the ones about chidren and about being decently covered. Thank you for the great thoughts on something we all have to deal with.

tammyswallow profile image

tammyswallow Hub Author 4 months ago

I agree Austinstar. It is like there is a subliminal message at the front door that says.. "leave your common sense, clothing, manners, values, and civility at the door." I don't get it either. Perhaps people who regualary shop there have a psychological feeling of owning the place.. Scary!

tammyswallow profile image

sabriani44,

I think austinstar is right.. the exits and the entrances seem to be on the wrong sides. It seems to be more of a problem going in than it does going out. All stores are designed to make you want to spend more.. but I still don't get it. Thanks for reading!

This is so brilliant in so many ways. I want to post this up at every Wal-Mart there is. But I have to include people not using their cell phones as a way to make an impromptu list. This includes calling, texting, surfing the web, or whatever. If you don't know what to buy then go home and make a list. I hate when someone's like: "Hey what kind of chicken do you want for Sunday?" Make a list! Okay before I get to Kanye on this, I'll stop. Awesome hub!

Hi Sharyn,

I don't dress up or put makeup on to go to Walmart either. There are many women who do that as if they are trying to meet guys.. lol.. I haven't seen the article, but I am sure it is very interesting. People like to blame all of Walmart's problems on the employees, but as someone who has worked in retail, people expect too much of them. Thanks Practical Mommy,

The last time I was in a Walmart I noticed that the exit and entrance problem is actually Walmart's fault. Shopping carts are retrieved by the entrance and also returned to the entrance. DzyMsLizzy Level 7 Commenter 3 months ago

Uh--yeah. If I was more well-to-do, I'd avoid the place like the plague. However, on our budget, I have little choice but to shop there for certain items.

Not food, though--their food prices are HIGHER than we pay at WinCo Foods, and Wally-World is further away, anyhow.

I have been run into more than once by rude EMPLOYEES who think that their need to get to the back of the store for their break, or to dump the trash sack they're carrying outweighs the customer's need to keep their balance and stay on their feet! And they do it as if you're invisible, with not so much as a backward glance or an "excuse me."

As far as the restrooms go--I'm sorry, but "passing gas" is a fact of life--and it gets worse as you grow older, and the older you get, the less you are able to control or "hold it." You appear still quite young--your turn will come... ;-)

These stores are huge, and by the time you could navigate the crowds to the other end of the store, (especially if you are elderly or motion-impaired), it's going to be too late. (Because, according to 'Murphy's Law,' the other end of the store is ALWAYS where the restrooms will be.) These events do not make appointments. The best you can do is have the decency to apologize.

Otherwise, your points are all right-on. Voted up, and I wish I could print it out and stand at the entrance to hand a copy to everyone coming in the door!

Tammy,

Thanks for making me laugh--and I have seen some terrible dress codes on some people.

My worst experience at Walmart was when this elderly man was walking around the store, carrying his false teeth in his hand. And it always happens to me--he asked me if I knew where the teeth glue was--and could I help him find it.

I did not know, but I found out for him, and I showed him everything Walmart had available--and I read the instructions to him.

My sister said it would only happen to me--and the strangest things do seem to happen to me, she said I was too nice.

Thanks for the laugh--great writing---donkey and all.

Hi Kris! I don't know why, but Walmart is an example of society at its worst. I can only surmize that people feel ownership of Walmart, but if that is the case, it would be terrible to visit some people's homes. Thanks for the visit.

Loved the hub, wished those that need to see it would by some amazing chance actually stumble on here, read the rules and be better shoppers the next time they go to mecca of shopping that is walmart. Thanks for saying what what everyone else is thinking!

Thanks CZCZCZ.. It would be awesome if that happened, but those who need the most help rarely see themselves in such things. We can only hope for the best. It is a pleasure to meet you and thank you for leaving a comment.

Priceless! I never laughed so hard...but sadly this is all very true. Start the petition, I'm in. Voted up! Also bookmarked, to remind myself what I am in store for during my next trip to Wally World. I may change my mind and stay home.

Hello Tammy ~ Looks like I'm the last one to join in the laughter. Why do you shop at Wal-mart? Just to find material for your comedy act? It's working quite well. Actually, I thought this was to be a serious piece when I read the title. Then, as I began to read, the corners of my lips started to turn up and a giggle sprang forth as I read bulleted each item on the shopping list.

Well, I must miss all the fun, since I don't shop there at all. I hear they expanded our local store to the double-wide humungous size with the food section so you can really get lost in there.

Very much enjoyed the fun and laughter and the additional comments, especially from Alocsin with the loud-speaker and Miss Olive watching the people in the PJs and slippers at night. That's what I call dressing down. Well, golly-gee, this sounds so entertaining I may take a stroll one night. Blessings, Debby

LOL DebbyBruck! I guess it is the low prices and everything in one spot. I don't go on weekends. The super centers are getting so large that it can be quite a trek from one end of the store to the other. I have to pack bottled water and granola bars when I shop there. LOL.. Thanks for taking the time to leave such a wonderful comment!

LOVE IT because it's all so true! Particularly love the picture of the woman with her shirt messed up and the look of complete confusion on her face! Good ol' Wally World...I love Wally World but sometimes I hate going there merely because of the clientele. Voted up!

Tammy, I believe this trend is becoming a rule rather than an exception. Though we don't have an exclusively owned Walmart in India,(Best Price store here is an Airtel-Walmart collaboration) it does happen here too and I guess most of the time. Has the effect filtered down out here?!!

Well, enjoyed reading. A sad state of affairs though.

Voted up.

seriously, your hub needs US wide attention Tammy. CA also suffers in the above and these rules should be pinned outside their stores.

voted up indeed as interesting and funny :) Sharing it across!

Hi Tammy, this is funny, in Europe we have stores called Lidl which I use because the prices for basic stock items are good but it does sound like your Walmart stores, i really have to brace myself for going shopping there. lol

Take care Carrie ;-)

OMG, Tammy, dear...I don't think anyone appreciates comedy any more than I do....but, I'll tell you what...When I read your list of rules, I felt myself feeling very serious and disgusted....because every last thing you listed is in fact, the way it is. Wal*Mart may be the worst offender, but it really is everywhere.

It can be quite funny the first or second time around...but after that, I begin to DREAD going shopping and encountering all the rudeness, craziness an "eye-sores."

Tammy....really? Does it not boggle one's mind when you see a sight that makes you think...."AND JUST WHAT THE HELL WAS SHE THINKING WHEN SHE GOT DRESSED & DECIDED TO GO OUT IN PUBLIC, TODAY??!!" Know what I mean, GF??

After reading some of the comments from our hub-friends....I just had a revelation....instead of "going with the theme" (not being concerned with make-up, hair, fashion, etc.)....Maybe we NORMAL folks should start dressing for the PROM...to shop at Wal*Mart!! Think we could start a NEW trend??!!..........Nah, not a chance.

Thanks for your thoughtful comment fpherj48. I do think it is every where too. It makes it really difficult to go anywhere and take a child out and teach them to behave when everyone is so so rude. It ends up being a lesson on how not to behave in public. Thanks for stopping by with your unique sense of humor.

Oh, this is so funny. Also, so sad that Walmart really could use a list like this posted at all entrances, exits, and isles in Walmart. A little side note here - I stopped shopping at Walmart, though, not because of the shoppers, but because of the salespeople. The moment I walk into the store, a "secret" security guard is on my behind like white on rice - following me everywhere, peeking over displays, and so on. Not only is it distracting, it just creeps me out that they don't keep their distance while I'm shopping. I want to wear a special shirt when I go to Walmart that says, "Hey! I'm shopping here!" But, back to your hub… It is very enjoyable, and might I add, thorough and practical, too.

MarleneB, I am glad you do not support Walmart anymore, especially if they do that to you. My sons are in their late teens and 20's and they have tattoos and piercings and they get treated like this also. This is an insulting way to treat someone who is helping to support your paycheck. That is bad business. Walmart hires many, many "secret shoppers" to shop in the store for the soul purpose of catching people stealing. I am pretty certain many of the hovering shoppers that invade our personal space are actually watchdogs. It is insane.

It is nice to meet you here on hubpages. I appreciate your thoughtful comment.

I am about done with them also.

Isn't it amazing you continue to shop at wal mart ,or you would not be commenting. Yes they have wal mart police to keep you from stealing so has Nemine Marcus. I would rather see people doing stupid thing in wal mart than texting in their cars and killing people, and such inteligent folks texting on the street and walking into traffic, and walking into holes. playing stupid games on their i phones instead of talking to their neighbor where they might really learn something even if it just a new to fry an egg. Better any kind of social, life rather than an I Phone, now your only friend, that doesn't care .doesn't listen and more or less says go to blazes
