Why I skip certain hubs...
As a newbie, I enjoy reading hubs as much as I do writing hubs. There are so many astounding writers on hub pages writing about many new and interesting topics. To get a good understanding of what is new on Hub Pages, I will often "Hop" hubs to see what is new. There are some fabulous hubs in the hopper, but there are a multitude of Hubs I don't read for the following reasons:
- I love articles on decorating and home improvement. There are many promising hubs with instructions, ideas, designs, but there are no pictures or inadequate pictures to demonstrate these great ideas.
- On the other hand, many people post controversial photos to provide shock value to their hub. I stay away from hubs with grotesque pictures and topics. Some subjects repel readers and as a marketer of your own work, it is wise to remember that some readers are squeamish and actually have phobias that make them avoid your hub world wide.
- I don't read any Hub labeled "Part 7" or "Chapter 68" regardless of the topic or content. I feel that I would not understand the hub without the previous 20 hubs ahead of it. There are few subjects that I would personally want to read 67 consecutive hubs on, including stories. Few readers have the time needed to commit to finding and reading so many chapters.
- There are many laments, poems, and remembrance poems in the Hopper. I do not read consecutive depressing hubs such as, How to Tell Your Pet is Dying or I Discovered a Reason to Live Today. Occasionally there is a very creative hub that expresses these things, but not many people can handle that much depressing information in one day. As a reader, what makes these stories worth reading is the story behind it of overcoming obstacles and redemption- not to leave the hub feeling worse.
- If writing a tribute to a person or subject or writing a religious poem, you can increase readership (and your hub score and SEO searchability) by writing some interesting facts about your subject. This will make readers understand why you feel so strongly about your tribute and give them points on which they can start a discussion in the comment section. Every hub should encourage reader interaction and discussion.
- It is true, grammar and spelling errors deflect readers. If I see a hub with poor grammar in the title, I skip the hub entirely. This says to me that it was not written with care and probably not worth my time.
- Hubs that start off with numbers, math, or complex equations have a great following, but as someone who is terrible in math, it creates anxiety for me. Content that is so advanced that it is over the head of the reader makes for a difficult read. It is the same with articles on technology. I love to read about it, but if the article jumps right in to very complex material, I don't read it. A little back ground would help a reader like me "ease" into your Hub.
- Many stories and poems in the Hopper start off with, "I like to write, but I am not good at it", or "this story isn't done or still has issues.." By warning me ahead of time you have convinced me not to read your Hub. If you aren't pleased with it, you shouldn't expect anyone else to appreciate it. It may end up being the best Hub ever, so don't tell your reader what to think of your work before they have even read it.

Hi! I'll keep these pointers in mind. Thank you:))
...well Tammy I really do love your enthusiasm and world class open minded attitude - you're already half way there when you have those two fine attributes - and yes you're a darn fine writer too - so let me re-examine this equation - hey girl, you're all the way there - big time! lake erie time ontario canada 4:30pm
These are excellent observations, and I follow many of them when "hopping" hubs. Quite often it simply boils down to interest as to whether or not I will read a hub, but if I see grammatical errors, poor formatting or no photos in a hub that demands them, I don't waste my time. Rated up and useful!
... I forgot to say, "Welcome!" Looking forward to reading more of your hubs, tammyswallow!
You sound like a seasoned veteran! Well done!!!
I hope more Hubbers read this. There seem to be a growing number of aspiring poets who mistake melancholy for skill.
One turn off for me is a recipe or other instructional Hub that lack any specifics.
Thank you.
The reasoning behind your reason (now that's a weird sentence) is true. Sometimes, I just skip a hub because I have the feeling that it is unworthy of my time. Maybe your reasons explained why I feel that way.
Two thumbs up! I like upbeat posts too - something I can either learn or has good feeling to it! Looking forward to following your future hubs!
Well Tammy I must admit your list of hubs you skip got a little laugh out of me. I am one of the guilty ones who publish stories in Part I-II, so I guess thats one of the reasons these particular hubs dont get many comments. Thank you for your honesty. Enjoyed reading why a hub may have the possibility of being skipped. Voted up!
Your welcome Tammy!
great way to get it out there. this is wonderful and thanks for sharing from a great point of view hubs in general. good one tammyswallow.
I agree with you on many points. Of course some are personal and that's okay too.
The one point you made that I agree with the most is grammar and spelling. Errors with that is an indication that a writer didn't care enough to check their own work. Sometimes just reading it back helps see where the reader will have trouble understanding. I can usually tell when a Hub was published without being proof read by the author.
There are a few Hubbers who I've come to know and appreciate their work even though they have spelling errors. I try to look past it for a select few because they do have something useful to share. But errors stand in the way and I do tend to skip over the rest if I see too many errors.
Thanks for sharing your thoughts. All newbies should read your hub to understand what they need to focus on with their writing. Voted up.
I said the exact same things in my hub titled "Just Because You Enjoy Writing Doesn't Mean That You're Good At It"...and people got so mad! LOL. But I was merely expressing my opinion about the poor quality of many hubs out there. Thanks for being honest. Voted up and awesome!
Your observations are useful to me and others. When I first started writing here I wrote hubs that were too long. then I broke them up into smaller hubs but found that people didn't read them through. So now I try not to write anything that takes more than 1500 words.
Very inspiring hub, Tammy. Basically, I have the same idea with you. Keep on writing and do the best. Success for you!

. . .fortune telling. Just sayin . . .
Hey Tammy, I guess I should be surprised that you've read as many of my hubs as you have read. LOL! With that said, I would agree with much of what you said and I'm not much of a reader and will not read specific hubs. If a hub doesn't flow from the beginning and capture the attention of the reader, then I'm not likely to read it from beginning to end. Thank you for giving your perspective. :)
I agree with you. I guess we all have our preferences and I read what I want to read because I have a choice. I skip over hubs if they seem to boring and the layout is unappealing. A hub can be void of photos and still very presentable but some hubs are just one big block paragraph, I tend to skip those hubs.
Welcome to HP Tammy. I like honesty.
Hey tammyswallow! When hub hopping I think we all have certain things that turn us off and cause us to hit the hop button and just move on to the next one. It is great that you are trying to be helpful.
Welcome to hubpages! This is a great place to be!
Hi tammyswallow,
I giggled through this hub! then I voted it up, awesome and funny! I imagined a Far Side calendar of a hubber trying to pick out hubs to read, standing in a 6 month pile of calendar pages, each one with "try again tomorrow" stamped on it. (I know, it's weird)
Just really enjoyed the honest reality of your opinion. I didn't pay attention in school, just wanted to be a jock and unfortunately it often shows up in my writing. But I still love it, and I'm grateful for any tips I can get to help me or my fellow hubbers. So I hope you'll keep hub hopping! (I do that too! It's part of being in the community)
Gratefully,
Bruce

Hi Tammy!
I decided to dig into some of your older hubs. This is an excellent perspective. Very important and useful points. It's good to go back and remember how we felt when we first started on HP. It's easy to be trigger happy and simply hop to the next hub if it doesn't seem appealing. I pretty much agree with all the points you listed.
Thank you for sharing your thoughts. Voted up and sharing! :)
OMG, you were reading my hubs before you wrote this! Just kidding -- some good advice and required reading. I really dislike those part 68 hubs. Voting this Up and Interesting.
Very interesting Tammy, and I am in agreement with every point you make.
I think the same applies to recipe hubs as you’ve mentioned for decorating. I am planning to go back over my earlier recipe hubs soon and add more photos. Only problem is it means I’ll have to make more chocolate muffins - what a chore, what a bore… even worse I might have to eat some of them!
Tammy you may link to your heart's content :)
Thanks for updating this! It is very helpful. I especially agree with people who don't take the time to edit/proofread their hubs. I'm going to tweet/share this.
Nicehub Tammy, with a lot of good points mentioned.
Thanks for the interesting hub, Tammy. You offered some very helpful hints.
Excellent advice and thanks, Tammy, for all the fantastic links to tutorials. Voted up and a must read for newbies ;))
Thanks for information Tammy you made some great points.
I agree with you on all of these things Tammy. Luckily, I haven't seen the last thing - people mentioning the hub wasn't good, but I wouldn't want to read it either.
I would add this one: I think it is clear sometimes that someone jotted their ramblings really quickly and pressed the publish button just to get a hub out there. It is very obvious they didn't take the time to think about wasting their reader's time.
Thank you for including me in your sidebar of Great Writers. I am deeply honored to be included with the best.
I commented before and I still agree with all your pointers!! I'm noticing more recipes which always make me hungry so I've been cutting back on those to halt the temptation! :)
You make some excellent points. I love to hop hubs but I think how I feel hopping hubs is a perfect indication of how the rest of the world feels when they click on a page. If the subject, title and first paragraph don't grab me in about 3 seconds I hit the hop button.
This gives added good feelings for the fact that you occasionally read a Hub or two of mine, and even take the time to comment. Good points to keep in mind in this one of yours. As to my own Part I-IV (and soon V) I want to get the extraordinary biography done, but think that tired fingers and possibly tired readers is reason enough to stop at 1300-1500 words...and to not start anything that isn't intended to contribute to the readers and reputation of HubPages. Many Hubbers at one time or another say they come wanting to learn, I wish that those who profess that to be the case really meant it; I've been fooled in some cases into believing them.
I tend to avoid much the same things as you mention.
Excellent observations. I tend to skip hubs that are too short or too long. I like them to be just right. Hard to do, yet worth it. 600 words is about right for most hubs.
I happen to like recipes and have a put some of my own on. HubPages does have a categories for Food and Cooking so I would think they are acceptable on HubPages.
I don't think you will be reading to many of my hubs and maybe for different reasons than food.
Tammy I agree with all of your points. If a hub begins to suck the life out of me as I'm reading it I usually switch to another. Voted up and interesting.
I agree with you on the chapter articles but oddly enough there are a few that have uploaded entire novels here and done well. I don't read them but someone must be.
Great points! I can't get into the Chapter Hubs, either. And bad grammar and spelling or typos turn me away immediately. Yea, and when writers say, "This isn't very good, but I'm going to write it anyway." Really??!! Why say that? Anyway, great hub. Lots of votes. Thanks for including me in the Hubbers to Follow list! Sharing this one!
Well said! I agree completely. You've just described my behavior exactly when I hop hubs. I have tried to read some chapter hubs, and I just can't do it - I would end up not being able to keep track. But I do admit I've seen some good writing on those.
I think that many of us skip hubs for exactly the reasons you mentioned. One other thing that is a turn off for me is a huge, unbroken block of text.
Like many readers on the internet, I'm interested in skimming the article first, picking up headers and photographs that catch my interest. If those spark my interest, I go back and read the entire article. If the writer makes this difficult for me, I tend to skip on to the next, more interesting article.
Very interesting hub. I haven't really paid attention to why I stop reading hubs once I start. If they are too long, I tend to stop reading. I just don't have time unfortunately.
Great advice TammySwallow. I am another one that will not read chapter articles for the reason you mentioned.
Thank you TammySwallow. Great article, which has not only left me with the desire to improve but also the desire to read more of your hubs.
I really enjoyed reading this hub, because I agree with you. You can find really good and really bad hubs if you do some hub hopping. Voted up! :)
Great hub, loads of points here I can really relate to. If I am hopping hubs, poor spelling puts me off. I will look for interesting subject matters and hubs which are useful to me.
One great thing about HP is the fact that you can ask questions when you need a little help too.
Voting up!
Tammy Tammy Tammy! I am so happy you wrote this hub. You absolutely mentioned everything that I feel when searching for Hubs to read. Great job my Sweet T! Voted up and all the way across!
Go head Tammy! You're always on point! I love checking out your hubs!
Excellent tips and well-written, too. I definitely would have stopped to read this one if I saw it in the hopper!
Good pointers Tammy. Sure, the above stated pointers are a no-no but, I feel if they are still trying to convey a strong message...I would get drifted there...lol
On a personal front...I gotta watch out for all the above pointers so that you good prolific writers could come pay me a visit on my hub.
Cheers!
Very informative Tammy so nice to read your perspective as a reader and writer. I do like funny hubs and informative. As much as I love to write stories, I myself may not be putting many chapters on hubs anymore but saying that a nice hub with the explanation of the story, saying that this may be in print soon. Sort of a pre book review. I have found that I just take down anyway to edit and add more characters and detail. Lessons learned. Anyway great points..thank you for sharing.
Sunnie
Tammy I agree with you on the points of reading hubs. I like hub hopping. I will usually hop over hubs that are in bold face or italic all the way through too.
Hi,
Since we evidently do not read each others hubs--since I write fiction and poems, and you like to decorate, which I do redecorate once in a blue moon. However, I did read this one of yours, just to say "Hello" and that I enjoyed your hub.
Have a great weekend,
Bobbi
So true Tammyswallow! Great hub!!
This is just so true-- right on the money, as usualy Tammyswallow
You've covered some good, honest points here, Tammyswallow. Personally, I shy away from hubs that are difficult to follow, or not very well laid out. If I have to read a hub three times to understand it, then it probably needs work. That said, I really welcome criticism from fellow hubbers on how I can improve my own hubs...I guess it's the only way we really learn. Voted up & interesting :)
This is a very resourceful hub...Voted up and pimping on HP..
Thanks Tammyswallow. I appreciate your point of view and especially agree with you about spelling and grammar. There are many interests among Hubbers. I love Hopping hubs because it has made me learn/think about stuff I would have never given a second thought to.
Great hub! I've "hopped" and I sometimes wonder why some people even bothered: the hub is something like 10 lines long, no pictures, no capsules except text...why? In any case, great hub, voted up...and I agree about Chapter 9 or Episode 47. Nah - I don't want to have to figure out where part one is or if I can just jump in - those make me a little crazy! :) Voted up and SHARED.
Thank you for sharing this. As a newbie, I appreciate any tips I can get at the beginning when there are fewer hubs to go back and edit! I have found myself readdressing hubs at least once a week as I learn new tips. This was very helpful.
Very true. I agree with all points raised. It's very useful writing.
Amen to all your points! It's all about meeting readers' expectations, meaning you need to put your feet in your readers' shoes and see the world the way they do. Unless you're in a PhD program somewhere and have to read papers that begin with overly complex equations (or ideas), you're gone before the first sentence is over. Great advice for any writer, anywhere. Up and useful.
This is great Tammy! I'm not sure if anyone else mentioned it (too many comments to read when my little ones are vying for my attention!) but I go right past the hubs with every word underlined. I'm sure there's some gimmick behind it, but it's so unappealing and unattractive in a hub!
I hope current newbies take a look at this! Voted up and sharing. :)
I actually stopped hopping hubs routinely because I found so many that I just skipped. I much prefer to just follow quality writers and read their Hubs! You've been added to my list of hubbers to read :) Thanks for the great article!
Well, I found yours and am so glad I didn't "hop" over it. Terrific hub because it's fun to read and educational. Really nice job. Thanks!
tammy, great hub and so true. I've done a few four part stories and my on going music series, but I generally don't like to read long hubs, so I try not to write long hubs. Good advice. I'm glad you're one of my readers. I must be doing something right :-)
tammyswallow..your very insightful and personal observations and perspective is the reason why, in simularities and our differences, writers enjoy being part of the hubpages community. I, too, enjoy hub hopping and if I could find all the hubs of writers who are less than confident in their abilities and those who don't get many comments those are the ones I would read because I believe we get better with practice and encouragement.
Really enjoyed reading your hub. You provided some very thought provoking key points. Thanks for sharing.
You've brought to light some very interesting points from a newcomers view. I too wallowed in too many words at the beginning not realizing most don't take the time to read a hub through. Voted up, marked useful and interesting.
thank you tammy!
I'm so glad I was here and commented about 10 days ago. I maintain that this is a GREAT hub. You rock it, Tammy. :)
Hey I just noticed my shout-out in here, thanks! :)
I have to admit I will look at short stories and poems and recipes before anything else. that is where my interest lay. Great hub. I really enjoyed and thanks for all the tips.

You've done it again, TammySwallow. I agree with you. As a new hubber I try very hard to edit my own material over and over and I use spell and grammar checks. Thanks!
