25 Rudest Behaviors- Are You an Offender?
98
The Psychology of Rude Behavior
79% of Americans have indicated that rude behavior is on the rise in the United States. This epidemic is spreading across the country as one rude act inspires another rude act- which creates a cycle of rudeness in this country. When we drive to work, we are affected by an aggressive driver.. or a ridiculously slow driver which starts the day on a note of frustration. We walk into to work where a cheery person wishes us a good morning and all we can do is grumble. This employee takes this personally and becomes irritated and takes it out on the new customer coming in the door. This customer thinks the employee has a bad attitude. The cycle continues on and on.
There is more to rude behavior than just the frustration people feel day to day. Many factors influence a person's aptitude to be rude including a disposition to be impatient, not feeling as if they are being listened to, or being in a hurry- but the behavior all boils down to one thing:
People who are rude generally don't care about other people!
It is a sad but true fact. Our humanity is lost in the hustle and bustle of every day life. People are rushed, stressed, tired and taking it out on their fellow man. Here is a list of the 25 Rudest Behaviors:
25. Being noisy: Whether from your car, your home stereo, or in your yard, it is rude to blast loud music. Pulling into a gas station where two or more cars are blasting their bass is very irritating for all.
24. Cutting in Lines: It happens in the grocery store, public events, and amusement parks. No one is amused. Those who skip others in line think they are more important and have a sense of entitlement that makes them think they are below waiting their turn.
23. Interrupting: It is natural for very young children to interrupt adults when they are talking, but adults should know better.
22. ANY Form of Disrespect to the Elderly: It seems these days that new generations are not being raised to respect their elders. All people should respect those older than them (with limitations- I do realize that there are some cantankerous characters out there. We are talking about standard situations). People should show respect to the elderly by holding doors for them and offering them seats if they need one.
21. Not Returning Your Shopping Cart: This should be a simple thing to do but parking lots are full of un-returned shopping carts. When you think about how lazy we have become as a nation, such primitive things explain the obesity rate in the United States.
20. Barking Dogs (and neighbors who let their pets destroy your trash): Anyone who has been kept up all night by a barking dog can understand this entry. Parents with babies particularly find barking dogs to be irritating.
19. Bad Table Manners: Formal dining is no longer standard in the USA, but people should have respectable table manners. Elbows should be kept off tables. No one should reach over the table for food or expose a dinner guest to an armpit. Slurping, smacking, and chewing with one's mouth open is offensive.
18. Cutting Off Others in Traffic: Many people think their needs to get their destinations are more important than the safety of everyone on the road. Others get frustrated with bad drivers and are just trying to get away. Safety on the highways is more than good manners, it keeps everyone safe. Monitor your own driving so frustrated drivers won't have to cut in front of you.
17. Tailgating: Tailgating involves following the driver in front of you too closely by not allowing a "two second" space between yourself and the car in front of you. Some drivers think that if they follow the driver in front of them close enough, they can intimidate the driver to going faster or pulling over. This practice is the number one cause of automobile accidents in the United States. Because cars are so close to another, there is no room to maneuver for either car in the event of breakage. This behavior is not only rude, but it can be deadly- even for the tailgater.
16. Littering- Littering involves not placing garbage in its proper receptacle, throwing cigarette butts out the window of a car, not properly disposing of one's personal household garbage, and dumping trash in non approved areas (or on another's personal property). Litter of any kind is dangerous for the environment in many ways. Disposing trash in improper places hurts the environment, breeds vermin, disease, contaminates drinking water, and takes away from the aesthetic beauty of nature. Burning trash is banned in many neighborhoods in the United States, yet people continue to burn their trash because they do not want to pay for service. Not only does burning trash hurt the environment, it is risky. Burning trash can lead to a blazing, out of control wild fire in just minutes.
15. Not Using a Turn Signal- Refusing to signal a left or right handed turn is not only rude and lazy, it is illegal in most states in the U.S. Using a turn signal only takes a minimal "flick" but yet, more and more drivers are refusing to use this system of communication with other drivers. Sadly, using the turn signal benefits the one who is turning left or right from being rear-ended or side swiped on a busy highway.
14. Using the Last of Anything and Not Replacing It- This includes copy paper in the copier at work, gas in a shared car, and especially, toilet paper!
13. Being Late- Sure, life happens and sometimes we are all late for something. Those who habitually come to work late daily with the same excuse over and over are rude and hurt the morale of the office. Most people are understanding of lateness if they are notified by phone. Not calling to say you will be late is rude behavior. For those who are habitually late for meetings, family gatherings, dates, and work, it is strongly recommended you set all of your clocks at home ahead 15 minutes.
12. Improper Cell Phone Use: Acts reported as "rude" are on the rise since the popularity of the cell phone. It is rude to text someone else while having a conversation with others, talking on your cell phone during meals, DRIVING while texting or calling, browsing the Internet during dates and dinners, and answering a cell phone call while attending to other business.
11. Taking and Misusing Handicapped Parking Spots: Not only is parking in a handicapped spot rude, but it is illegal. These spaces are designated for those who need them- or for regular people shallow enough to obtain a temporary sticker and never parting with it.
10. Not Teaching and Enforcing Manners in Children: Not all parents are drill sergeants when it comes to child discipline, but not instilling any manners in your child only hurts his or her future potential. Allowing children to run wild in public places, letting them scream and throw tantrums is rude behavior.
9. Taking Credit for the Work of Others: Being a victim of article theft on Hubpages, this item is a personal gripe of mine. Taking credit for the work of others can be plagiarism, cheating, and brown nosing at work. Those who do not have the chops to get ahead in life rarely get very far by taking the credit for other people's work. Yet, this is a social epidemic.
8. Personal Grooming in Public: Grooming in public is insanitary and offensive behavior. A person should not clip or chew their nails in public, clean out their noses, or brush their hair in places other than the bathroom. Many people find it acceptable to brush their hair in public places. Doing so leaves hair and dead skin cells all over the place. Hair in one's food is disgusting. Grooming should be done in the rest room.
7. Treating Store Employees/ Waitstaff Rudely: So many people walk into public establishments and businesses with an outrageous sense of entitlement. Sure, if you are paying for a service and you should expect to receive great customer service, but some people are totally unreasonable and never happy. It seems as if people who are frustrated with their own problems enter establishments and make employees pay for their bad experiences. We have all seen these difficult customers. Anyone who yells at their waitress and sends their food back to the kitchen really need to watch the movie "Waiting" showcasing what the kitchen employees think of your sense of entitlement.
6. Cashiers Who Talk on Their Cellphones and Don't Acknowledge Customers During Checkout: It is increasingly popular to walk into a convenience store to pay for gas and the cashier is deep into heavy gossip on a cell phone. The cashier doesn't acknowledge you whatsoever and just throws change your way. Forget about asking this person for directions. Many people checking out can be found on their cell phones and do not pay attention to the questions or the thanks of the cashier. These same people complain (see item 7) when they don't get exactly what they want.
5. Blocking the Isles in Walmart and Grocery Stores: This item also reflects people in society who have an enlarged sense of entitlement. Everyone must shop for groceries at some point or another. It is increasingly common to disregard fellow shoppers in public. Many people block isles in popular stores and make it difficult to get around. They inquisitively stare at the canned soup on one side of the isle while they park their cart on the other side. These shoppers "block out" (pretend not to see) that five people are waiting to get around them.
4. Leaving Messes in Public Bathrooms and Not Washing Your Hands: It takes a surprisingly small amount of effort to flush a toilet. For those readers who do not know how to do this, it merely involves pulling down the small handle on the back of the toilet. Simple, yet whether for laughs or twisted mind, people get a kick out of leaving public toilets full of waste. Even worse, people increasingly don't wash their hands after using the bathroom. These germs are distributed every where for the rest of us to enjoy. Hand washing is good for everyone and keeps the hand washer germ free with less instances of illness.
3. Driving Slow in the Left / Passing Lane: Why? On any two lane road, the left lane is designed for passing the slower traffic in the right lane. However, slow drivers have no problem driving 10 miles below the speed limit in the passing lane for the duration of their travel. They either do not see the mounting traffic stuck behind them or hear the honking of the horns of those who would like to pass them. Many states are finally cracking down on those who do this. In New Jersey and Maryland, the state has painted into the left lanes FOR PASSING ONLY! Fines are finally being given to those who rudely creep along in the passing lane. It is a fact that people who drive too slowly cause more accidents than those who drive to fast. These new laws are wonderful for those of us who travel regularly.
2. Talking and Using a Cell Phone in Movie Theaters: According to the Huffington Post, patronage at movie theaters is at a 16 year low. Fewer people are paying to see movies in theaters. Americans have started turning their backs on public movie theaters not only because of the outrageous price of tickets and refreshments, but because they can't enjoy the movie they have paid an arm and a leg to see because of other rude customers. People leave their manners at the door of the movie theater because they feel they are anonymous in the dark. Rude movie goers talk on their cell phones, receive calls, talk to each other, make out, and yell at the screen. Like many Americans, I no longer watch movies in theaters but in the peace and comfort of my own home.
1. Not Picking Up After Your Dog and Letting Them Use the Bathroom on Private Property: Few things infuriate people in America worse than irresponsible, rude, lazy pet owners that let their pets run free on other people's property to use the bathroom and worse, walking them on a leash and taking them to the bathroom without picking it up. People who take pride in their yards are subject to rude pet owners who refuse to clean up their pet and it is unsanitary and kills the grass. Not only is this toxic, disgusting, and nasty, it is illegal in most cities who place ordinances on the books to protect people from this sick practice. This is not something people should tolerate. If you have a consistently rude neighbor who lets their pet deficate in your yard, get them on camera and take the evidence to your local city or county administrator. If you live in an apartment or condo where this is an issue and management will not address the issue, tell them that you will take the issue to your county or city who will inspect the property and most likely, give them a big fine.

hahaha The last picture is pretty funny.
I guess I'll have to stop doing my makeup in the car while driving slowly, tailgating people in the left lane of the highway. Geeesh.
But, seriously, you nailed it w/ this list. I may just print this out & leave it... everywhere. =] (Well, without littering, of course!)
Funny and yeah I love the last picture too.
Great article, personally I can put up with most of those the one thing I hate is when the person in the seat in front on a flight puts their seat back in my face! :)
Drives me crazy when people walk by my house and let thier dogs do their business on my front lawn. I don't allow my dogs on my front lawn. There's this woman that walks by everyday with her dog and as soon as she hits my house she lets the dog off its lead. I think she thinks because I have dogs this is okay to do. I've decided the next time she does this I am going to tell her to keep her dog on its leash.
Great hub
This is awesome!
Voted up funny & awesome!
These are irritating behaviors. I'm going to plead the 5th on answering your question in the title though.
Somebody needed to write this and I'm glad you did. I was raised in Texas and my mother always taught me that good manners were a way of showing respect. Good manners are huge with me. Maybe too huge. I DO have a problem with turn signals. I learned to drive in Southern California. They are viewed as a sign of weakness there, and you'll never get into that lane you need to get into by using them. lol . Other than that, I'm cool with the rest of them I think.
This was very fresh, and I loved it!
Jim
Thanks for sharing this list - I think a lot of us can relate to most if not all of it. Good job!
I have to admit I have been known to do #23. And yes, I should know better.
But you want to know a really sad thing? I can't drive because of my lack of dexterity and quick reflexes in my right hand. I cannot respond fast enough to drive. No disabled parking tickets are needed when people are driving me as I only need help walking on ice and so I would be seen holding on to someone. I am easily identified.
But my brother-learning disabled (dyslexia and ADD) not physically disabled - used to have a disabled parking spot banner which he used so he could park wherever he wanted. This coming from a person related to someone who is indeed physically disabled.
And some people wonder why my relationship to my brother is all messed up...
Okay Tammy, I'm perfect because I can honestly say, I am not guilty of any of those things. I think I am a freak. People who know me personally will tell you I am too fussy to break those rules. So maybe not perfect but most of those things annoy me anyway so I wouldn't do something that annoys me. I really hate seeing the dog poo and hate seeing the supermarket cart being left for the elements or just pushed in a corner of the aisle.
I hate such behaviors.
Tammy....It never ceases to amaze me when encountering individuals who haven't the slightest clue, nor "interst" in COMMON COURTESIES. In my world, manners and everyday socially acceptable behavior is a NO BRAINER. It is definitely originated in the home from the time you are able to speak. Toddlers can say "Peeze" and "TaTa," at the very least ...to just get started! These days, I see it's a special treat if someone who has just rammed you with a grocery cart, to say, "Oh, excuse me!" rather than give YOU a dirty look for being in their way!!! My my, Miss Manners has surely died.......good topic, Tammy!
To tammyswallow: Excellent hub. People are certainly getting ruder by the minute......they acknowledge this and refuse to apologize for it! However, their behavior make it bad for the rest of us polite people who must endure it!
I remember I was in the store about a year ago shopping. As I was trying to get to the next aisle, a person was mindlessly taking on the cellphone. I said excuse me at least ten times but to no avail. Then I yelled at him to shut up and to stop talking on the cellphone in not too delicate language. The person become incensed and accused ME of rudeness. Can you imagine-the selfishness of it all!
I agree! Great hub! But I do agree with Fpherj48. I think the top of my list of rude behaviors would be running into people and not saying excuse me. I see people do this all the time. I was at the mal last week, and this teenager ran into me from behind. I said "excuse me" and she turned around and gave me a dirty look. People really need to learn common decency. I also love the driving one though. I drive on a 2 lane HWY a LOT, and I hate hate hate being stuck behind someone in the left lane who wants to go the exact same speed as the guy in the right lane. This is the reason people have road rage.
I am guilty of #1 some of the time BUT my doggy is barely 8 lbs and takes tiny poops! I'm good with the other 24 PLUS I've noticed less rudeness in others. I don't like when you hold the door open for someone and they don't say thank you. It's common courtesy:)
#23 is probably my worst one but it's usually with people I'm familiar with like my mom. It's still bad because it still says that I more important than the person speaking. Have to work on that more.
Blocking the aisles in stores is one of my biggest pet peeves. I try not to do it but the layout of some stores is ridiculous. Where you put your cart in the aisle always blocks someone's view of the products they need so I try to be as courteous as possible.
Great hub and thank you!
This is a great Hub! I agree: people are so rude now a days. It's like they have forgotten how to be mannerly. I have a neighbor who returns Poop to the offending party's yard with a shovel.
Tammy, I live in Jamaica and trust me Jamaicans do all those thing on the list and more, as I said, maybe I have some sort of weird disorder that makes me different. I have seen worse than those. Just last week I saw someone take a leak in the middle of the road and everything was exposed...I mean his tiny weaner and all...lol
Some are totally agreeable, yet i can't see blowing one's nose in public as being more rude than taking a handicap parking spot when not needed.
All of these drive me crazy! Great hub.
Society it seems is getting ruder by the day. I get so wound up in the library where people are chatting away on their mobile phones or having a loud conversation with their friends. I asked a young man politely to keep his voice down as I couldn't concentrate. He told me to F*** off and stormed out! My worst irk is rude children though. Some of them have no consideration for anyone else and think they rule the world. Even more annoying is when their parents are with them and don't address their behaviour! I suppose that's why they are like they are! I'm perfect obviously!
I'm not guilty of these things but it might be because I don't get out much. There is the other side. A few years ago when I was a bus commuter I was rather surprised when high school students would offer me their seats. There is still some courtesy in the younger people.
Wow, talk about a comprehensive list. You touched on all of my pet peeves here. I love this. I think everyone should be required to take a class in manners because as hard as it is to believe, many people just don't know better, of course others just don't care.
I try hard not to be rude to others but I guess I am rude sometimes anyway! I know I can use my car like I am more important then others if I am in a hurry! Maybe that is part of the problem, people are to busy and stressed out to think right? Most of us know how to behave even though we are not so polite as they where before.
I am impressed over the long list of rude behavior but I agree on all of them:)) Great reminder!
Tina
I don't like being rude and often go out of my way to do the right thing. I am guilty of some of these at one time or another, but I try not to make any of them habits. These all drive me crazy, too!
I laugh at my self when I read this.... because at some point I do these kind of things (some) because I thought its just something normal... (like grooming in public) yeah I do these specially when I am late most of the time I sit at a park near the office and do my makeup.. :)
well things should change..)
1 and 5 really really REALLY chap my ass. But, my number one is when an able bodied person jaywalks or crosses the cross walk SLOWER then is needed. I also find people that where TAPOUT gear are almost always rude and people who let their little dogs hang with the big dogs at the dog park and then don't do anything about them being yippy and nippy
Every one of the behaviors you mentioned is rude and unacceptable! This is a great list, and a worthwhile review - wish I could mail it to a few people I've met! Number 11 - taking handicap parking spots from people who really need them makes me furious! When I see this happen, I will go into the store and report it to the manager! Great hub, voted up and shared!
Gmwilliams hit the nail on the comment above: it's all selfishness. I think we've turned into an egocentric nation: we care only for ourselves and think nothing of being rude to others around us. Sad. I wrote on my blog the other day about a man who had jumped over my fence into my yard just to access the private property next door to my house and then proceeded to take down my 'No Trespassing' sign and threw it to the ground. How rude is that?! People don't understand the basis of being considerate to other people's property, along with everything else you mentioned above. Just plain sad.
Great hub. Voted up and sharing!
A great list of offending rude behavior. The worst is the people cutting line! This irritates me to no end especially when I have my little ones out shopping. The other one is changing the toilet paper when it's out - my all time pet peeve as a mom :) Excellent hub - voted up and tweeting!
Excellent points. I have used a few "tricks" to subtly or not-so-subtly let the rude know they are being rude.
In the case of grocery-aisle blockers, I'll simply say in a plenty-loud-enough voice to penetrate their "tuning out" behavior, "EXCUSE ME!" (sometimes with an edge of sarcasm..) .. usually this works, and they get all apologetic and quickly move. Back when we used to do shows at the Renaissance Faire, we used the manners of those days, going through the walkways with our cart, and someone yelling, "Maaaake Waaaa-aaayy!" .. I wonder if that would work in the grocery store. (kidding)
As for the dogs...back when my kids were young, we had a neighbor a couple of doors down who let her dogs out unattended to 'do their business.' They always seemed to choose my front yard. ... (we, too, had a dog then, but only allowed him out in our own backyard to do his thing). Well, after months of this, I got sick of it...so one day I went out with a heavy paper sack, and cleaned up all the leavings. Then, after dark, I walked down to their house, and emptied the sack all over THEIR yard. That solved the issue. Sometimes you have to fight fire with fire.
Here in CA, we don't have stickers for handicapped parking--it is a large plastic tag that hangs from your mirror--and it has a boldly printed expiry date, so you cannot keep using a temp placard beyond its 6-months expiration. There is also a minimum $250 fine for parking an unauthorized vehicle in a handicapped spot...this also applies to rude people who park next to a handicapped spot in such a way as to prevent its use.
Great hub--voted up, useful and shared.
You hit it right on the money with this hub! I have learned patience with slow drivers, as I live in a tourist town. I just keep remembering that they do not know where they are going and that mountain roads are scary (any time you drive on them). Thanks for the great info.
I couldn't agree more with your list. I actually wrote a hub on people who refuse to use their turning signals, that drives me nuts. I just think some people are airheads at times and common sense has almost been eliminated.
Really funny, the last one and all are great. I loved your collection and facts you have written!
Great list. I am increasingly frustrated with people's general rudeness--it is a serious epidemic! Thanks for addressing these. Voted up, useful, and interesting, and shared. Thanks for sharing!
Yours is a thorough list, and several of the actions on it are major annoyances to me.
Since I have a permanent disability parking permit prescribed by my doctor and issued by the Department of Motor Vehicles, it really angers me when I see someone without a disabled permit on his or her car and (this person) looking/acting quite fit... taking up a parking space reserved for the disabled, while those of us who truly need them are left without.
Next on my personal pet peeve list is the person walking a dog and letting it stop in my yard to poop. I have been known to go to my door and yell, "STOP! Take your dog home and let it poop in YOUR own yard!" when spying such a culprit. Recently my son built a picket fence around my front yard so now only a small section of the lawn between the fence and the street can get the "attentions" of rude dog-walkers' pets. This helps most of my front lawn (except for where cats jump the fence and do their own thing--but that's another topic) and keeps my blood pressure closer to normal.
There are a number of young people living in my neighborhood who play their car radios so loudly the noise reverberates for blocks. It always includes that blasting, thumping bass one would expect to destroy the speakers, but, alas...no, they survive. These teens and twentysomethings pull up in their own driveways or the drives at their friends' homes and let the noise continue unabated while they hang out. Even were I to share their taste in music (which I don't), I still wouldn't want to listen to it at such ear-damaging volume. It's a waste of time to report anything of this nature to the police as "disturbing the peace", as these kids have a built-in "patrol car radar" that enables them to turn off the radio before the police reach hearing distance.
That's my personal "rudeness" list, and I understand the reason for (and occasionally am miffed by) many of the others you described.
Voted UP, USEFUL and INTERESTING. Thanks!
Jaye
You brought up some really important points here. I live in Georgia, where most backroads are one lane roads, and If there's one thing I can't stand, it's drivers who intentionally try to provoke you by going 25mph on a 45mph road, knowing you would'nt overtake them. And they do this during the morning rush hour too. aaahhhh!
All I can do is scream!
Great hub.
This is a great list. I want to add rude people who do not shovel the snow on their sidewalk even though they are supposed to do so within 24 hours according to city laws. One of these days, I am going to be able to really sue someone good when I slip and fall because they didn't bother following that law.
Great hub and voted up!
Jeanie- where I live there is a free service called Operation snow angels because there are lot of retired people who can't shovel their own sidewalks. There is a hefty fine if it isn't shoveled. You just call them and someone does it for free. With my balance issues I would likely use the service myself if I had a house instead of living in a building with its own maintenance crew. You do nothave to be retired. You just have to have limited mobility to qualify.
;-) Mischief is my middle name! :-D
Tammy,
These are all good ones, no argument from me. I might add people who smoke RIGHT in front of you, blowing thier smoke right there for all to breath in, MAY be the rudest. Also, I have a brother-in-law who has issues with GAS, and see's a great deal of humor in releasing this gas in confide quarters, is another that makes me want to violate some rude manners in return...but that is perhaps another hub to be dealt with.
Good hub, you are getting a great response with!
Chris
I agree with everything on this list. I especially hate bad table manners, it's just gross. I also hate when I'm sitting behind someone (usually a girl) in class and they start combing their hair and dandruff and hair gets all over my desk! Disgusting! Thanks for writing this.
Oh, yeah--I'm a practical joke specialist... :D
What a great hub Tammy!!!
What a great hub Tammy!!!
Great job with pointing out rude behavior in public places. Another one worth mentioning is - taking babies/infants to movies theaters.
This is great, I love it! I can so relate to many of these. My Aunt is constantly battling people walking through her yard right passed the no trespassing signs-they even do it with us sitting outside. They walk right passed us. Yes we let them know it is not cool but they don't care.
I am guilty of a couple things on this list on occasion. My table manners are not always the most proper. But I am not too bad. Funny how you mentioned the people taking up the isles in the store. This is a big reason why I don't go to Shoprite anymore. People meet up in the busy isles of the supermarket. I am the one to say something tho-I always let people know exactly how rude they are no matter where I am. Depending on their offense of course. I can overlook some things :)
That's a great list! My husband and I had a friend we actually stopped going out with because she was so rude to servers, we were embarrassed being there with her. My husband would wait until she left the table and apologize to the server.
Rude. Rude. Rude. You got the major ones coverered very well in this hub. A couple of mine that I know is the prevalence of undertippers or plain non tippers in restaurants. Super rude. My other pet peeve is about pets, dog owners who let their animals bark all night. WE are not the ones responsible for their animals. Keep those doggies quiet.
Tammyswallow, Have you been following me?
Awesome hub!! I do feel like people are getting more and more rude. I'm not sure if it's a lack of teaching what's rude or if people just don't care if they're being rude. Either way, I'm glad you addressed so many issues here!!
A great list, and yes, rudeness is just.....RUDE! It should not be tolerated. We own a takeway food business and more often than not there is dog mess on the pathway just outside. There is even a council sign up warning of a fine for dog fouling! It has little effect. It's doubly bad for all the kids walking home from school...*sigh*
Tammyswallow,
Yeah some people are worst when you point out how rude! Sometimes it makes them uncomfortable enough to at least walk away from you when you say something tho. It is great that your son will voice his opinion (as long as it is under control.) Walmart is the worst place for rude, your son probably can't stop finding rude people there if he went in blind folded :)
Maybe I am rude for indulging in "passive agression" from time to time. If there are people who are letting their kids run wild in the store, threatening to knock my cane out from under me, I will turn and say to my husband, (loud enough to be overheard, of course,), "Isn't that what they make LEASHES for??!!" (or "ball gags" .. as the case may fit...)
;-)
I agree with you. If these rude behaviours continue to persist, subsequently the cycle continue! Good hub!
Thank u for sharing. Useful and Interesting. Vote up.
Great list Tammy, Your number 1 is top of my list and also people who just throw litter down when there's a bin a few metres away. What planet are these people living on!
Excellent hub!
I wish children could learn in school the ethics of good manners. (Philosophical study of social values and rules). One horrible bad manner these days - and I am guilty too - is using your cellphone for whatever reason while you are in the company of other people.
This hub about rude and offensive behavior should be read by millions.
Excellent and sadly all true. I see and hear rude people every day. But hey, I work in customer service. :)
nicely done hub, you've listed the rudest yet the most common behaviors i think all of us are guilty at some point. another behavior i find rude is wasting too much energy and resources when others barely have it.
Oh my goodness Tammy! I had to take a lunch break before I got down here to comment! lol You hit the nail on the head like a tack hammer nailing a coffin shut. I am guilty of some of that stuff - like I am a really intolerant driver. I catch myself cursing. I read an article once about those kind of drivers who will fly up and act like they own the road - they said that those people think their problems are more important than ours so while we are going "hey - you could hurt someone doing that!" they are thinking "move - you are in my way."
Thank you for all the hard work and great reminders. You did a fabulous job and I will try to modify my behavior too:)
Hello Tammy,
Well you just about covered everything that bugs the life out of me too.
Tailgating really irritates me, so I do the best I can. I slow right down to a crawl and that drives them crazy! which is nice. Payback!
I have seen women fixing their make-up, talking on a cell and smoking all at the same time. I slowed down and watched one, as she weaved side to side, along the highway oblivious to other road users. Where's a cop when you need one.
I have seen plenty of men doing the same thing but mostly not applying make-up lol
Voted up useful interesting and SHARING IT EVERYWHERE this hub maybe some of these dumb idiots will read it.
PS it has been proven that driving while talking on a cell phone, has the same effect as drunk driving. If you have been behind someone doing this, you will see them moving all over the road. Morons! Why do they do it? They are not that important that they need to answer the phone while driving. Vain, Selfish, rude and ignorant! Phew! glad I got that off my chest lol
Wow,girl! I think you have covered everthing! Manners and respect seem to becoming a thing of the past. I really am sad about that. I hope I have taught my children better. I hope everyone shares this everywhere they can. Maybe some of these people will get the hint. Voted up and awesome, sharing everywhere I can! Thanks!
The meaning of "rude" to many does not affect them, they consider their bad behavior as part of their "colorful" personality. You are right that people should speak up when offended or offensive behavior are in display. But, a lot of people are afraid to point out these things because of the threat of verbal or physical violence. It is not uncommon to meet people who seem mellow and turn out to be a wacko. What I find heinous, are children who behave that way because parents had allowed them to display these behaviors. I've seen them more and more. Thanks for covering the dog poop segment. I asked that in the Forum lately and it's interesting how some people would approach the situation.
awesome hub! You should link to my hub about picking up dog poop! The picture of the backyard with all the garbage in it, is that someone you know?? Yuk!
Great Hub. I know someone who snorts a lot - how annoying!
basically, tammy, anyone who's cavalier with other people's time (by driving too slow, by blocking aisles, by using their cell phone in line, by being overly coupony), especially mine, is rude in my book. i even carry around my invoice book (free lancing) and when I'm feeling especially snarky, I'll write up an invoice and hand it to someone who's been wasting my time.
Very good points! I am guilty of #23. I often interrupt people during a conversation and they don't like it! I am trying to work on this but it has been years and I don't know if it will change. I better keep writing instead of talking! I am also guilty of #'s 14 and 13 sometimes, but I am proud to see that I am scoring well overall! Really awesome Hub Tammy! Voted up etc.
Thanks for SHARING!
JSMatthew~
Wow what a list I almost got lost getting to the comment box. lol Great list of lack of manners. I thought manners was just a lost art today. THANKS FOR SHARING
mljdgulley354, the comments go on forever! I almost had to take a break while scrolling down! Carpel Tunnel!
JSMatthew~
The only one I think I'm guilty of is driving in the turning lane. It's a faster lane so I prefer to be in that lane. Awesome hub!
Love this list. I have been guilty of not always using my turn signal. It's that good ole New Orleans way of driving. I usually take a lost shopping cart from the lot into the store to help clean up the parking lot. What I hate is dog poop on the sidewalk. People let their dogs poop right on the sidewalk and it is so gross!
I believe some or most of us manage to hit of of this behavior more than once in our lifetime :D
tammyswallow, you have hit 25 nails on the head with this hub!!!
This is certainly worthy of posting in every grocery store, every convenience store, restaurant, intersection, cashier station, workplace, MY HOUSE, etc.
These are NOT the social norms! People have relaxed standards, and no longer give a rats booty about the impact of their behavior on others.
Kudo's to you!!! Oh...and voted Up, Useful and AWESOME!!
Of the common ones, I see bad table manners like playing on your phone or gaming device (ok I play with my phone!) when you're eating. I've seen people leave their shopping carts in open spaces without even trying to prop them on a curb or put them back in a designated area. I find people who take a handicapped spot who don't really need it, deplorable.
Think #25 should be #1. Otherwise most of this stuff makes good sense. Interesting.
Thanks for SHARING!
You have hit the nail in the head. There are so many comments, that say enough. Thank you for #1. That is one thing nobody seems to consider very rude but really is almost a crime. Most nice Avenue's in my city, which would make for wonderful walks are absolutely not so because of the lazy and rude owners of pets, Who often don't even care to walk their own pets, but leave it to the helping hands, and littering on the pavements seems to be quite taken for granted. Voted up.
I live on a corner lot - I have a huge window in the front of the house and very often people will let their dogs roam on my huge front lawn and poop everywhere! Some people don't clean it up - lately each time I see someone - I get right ip in the big window and smile and wave:) lol. I noticed it makes people self conscious about "picking up what they are putting down" so to speak!
...well dear Tammy it took me so long to scroll down to the bottom of this screen that rude behavior no longer exists in the human race - lol - but while it did - you certainly hit the proverbial nail on the head with this stellar list of 'faux pas' and I can see it stirred up quite a reaction so let's post this on my Facebook page with a direct link back here and teach that crowd some good manners too - lol lol
p.s. - by the way did you receive my urgent message on your Facebook page
lake erie time ontario canada 12:44pm
All of these are funny and downright rude - some I've learned to ignore or walk away from but the one I cant stand is personal grooming in public - eeeeeeeeeeew. Thanks for the laugh Tammy!
Great Hub!
# 3, driving slow in the left lane is my pet peeve. I just can't stand it!
I am pleased to say that I am a very good boy. I do not do any of these. :D
Wait a minute . . . I thought I was off the hook. I just read the picture captions. Do you mean to say that:
"The roving eye is actually rude and offensive!"
Oh-oh. I think I'm in trouble.
I had time to read one hub this afternoon and this was the one I chose....and I'm glad I did. Great hub and I agree that rudeness has increased greatly in the United States. I have several theories why but no time to get into them. I always enjoy your hubs...nice job!
Hi Tammy,
I have to agree that rudeness has somewhat increased. People just seem to have this "I don't care what people think of me" attitude. I loved the entire list and kept saying to myself "yup", "yup that one too." I can honestly say that I am guilty of only one, being late. Yet, I have gotten better than I used to be years ago. And your top #1 rudest behavior I cannot stand. I really believe whoever does that really does other rude behaviors on your list as well. There's no excuse for it. Great hub voted across! Yes, it's "beautiful" too :)
Sharyn
Give you a five is certainly more than my words...great job done Tammy, I always believe that having good manners is what we show the respect to others, and showing respect is not merely for elders but to everyone...thanks for the sharing, you deserve the voting for this hub, up of course, cheers!
Boy, this shows we are so much enveloped in this bad behavior that do not realize until someone points out...lol
Thanks Tammy. Need to share it since, awareness can bring about a change!
You've hit the nail right on the head with this list, tammyswallow! My biggest pet peeve has to be when people cut in line in front of me. I must admit, I did it once because I was in a super hurry - and then I felt REALLY guilty afterwards. Would never do it again!!!! Voted up & sharing.
THANK YOU!!!!!! I am so happy someone has written a hub on these behaviors! I think most of these are my pet peeves!!! Thank you!! Voted up, interesting, useful and AWESOME!
I think though, I am only guilty of sometimes not returning the shopping cart to the store or to the designated areas. Those times I'm just tired or lazy. Most of the time I do though.
People on cell phones are the worse. In a public place talking, and everyone within 50 feet can hear them...I've told many to take it down a notch..WE don't want to hear your convo about your smoozing the boss at the company party last night...Or the one about the stripper at your party either...HAHA Some peeps just don't get it. And tail gaiters...BACKOFF! Dang, that felt good to vent....thanks for the great hub friend!!
I cam back for another peek--it is still as good the second time around!
Looks like you hit a few nerves with this one! I get peeved at bad drivers--tail gaiters, speeders, frequent lane changers especially those who don't use their turn signals, and people who drive too fast in parking lots. I plead guilty to talking too loud on occasion, especially when I'm expressing disagreement with some jackass who doesn't agree with me.
great great hub ! everything is so true the driving, the animals, everything i agree with everything !!!
Very nice list of rude behaviours and I regularly follow 24, which I want to correct myself. Thanks for SHARING and voted up:)
I was a victim of number 2 on this list while at the movies watching Mission Impossible. During one of the most intriguing scenes someone was on their cellphone chatting away. Very annoying! Great hub Tammy!
I do believe you covered just about everything, and very well at that! LOVE it! I tend to live under a rock these days, as I am so tired of the rude behavior of people. Voting up and awesome and definitely sharing!
I agree, sad but true. You're very welcome!
Oh My you are so right.. I am so tired of all the rudeness. but unless you snatched the phones out of people s hands or attack them all we can do is roll our eyes.. LOl
great hub.
Debbie
Tammy, I've linked this to Loudbraries: http://pdxkaraokeguy.hubpages.com/_3gvrkbouobv74/h
Sorry :( I guess am a bit rude as I am guilty of some of this in your list. (But not always hahaha)
Very wisely written post. Thanks tammyswallow for sharing. Voted up and interesting..
Amazing and complete collection of rude behavior. After going through it I would say I have been rude at times and will now surely take care in the future!
Amazing hub!
A great hub once again Tammy. A nice checklist for all of us.
Voted up and pushed all the buttons except that it's not funny.
very rude yet very funny.. lol.. I love this hub.. voted up!
Wow! You struck a few nerves with this one. Nice job. You should add a few about rude behavior on Hubpages and the Internet.
Good list. People not using their turn signals infuriates me to no end. I've noticed drivers in the US are using their turn signals less and less, as if it were an annoyance. In many other countries police give out huge fines for not using a turn signal, and rightly so. After a 2nd offense their licenses should be revoked. I mean if someone is too lazy, too stupid or both to use a turn signal, they should not be driving at all.
I've noticed the same thing about people not using turn signals. Bad trend. Tailgating is even worse, especially on freeways at 70+ mph. Also, the above while talking on a cell phone. Big SUV and pickup truck drivers are the worst, in my experience.
lol. i'm guilty for being noisy and late.
I saw a foreigner scream at a staff member at an airport once and it's just because he doesn't like to pay for the extra baggage. The staff member tried to explain but the guy kept complaining and screaming. People were looking with interest and curiosity. Eventually, security came and i think he and his family was taken somewhere.
This is a great hub and I voted up and interesting. People in Thailand are just as guilty as Americans for the 25 rudest behaviors. Some of the things which we think are rude such as picking your nose are accepted here. Other things that we do such as crossing our legs and pointing our feet at people are considered rude by Thais.
This was great! It really had me laughing.
I've seen it all, just about everything you mentioned in your hub. The one that gets to me the most is tail gaiting because it's so dangerous.
Funny and so true. My pet peeve is not washing hands after using the restroom. I cannot count how many times I have watched people leave the restroom without washing their hands. It is an unhealthy and rude habit. You increase your chances of getting sick and spreading communicable diseases to those around you. Gross and it takes a minute to wash hands.
Yes....yes ...yes great hub ,I wish I could have thought to address this subject matter in one of my hubs! I think people have gone well beyond rude to ignoring others,to me rude behavior stems from at least acknowledging others then being inconsiderate but now people pretend no one
else is around. To me that is beyond rude.My pet peeve people that walk their dog off leash ,they figure if they are not on leash the owner won't clean up after it .Some people are just to lazy (period).Great hub :-)
Excellent observation - now all we need to do is to get others to understand what they do is unacceptable (perhaps even ourselves sometimes). Even the English, renowned for their good manners would do well to look at ourselves critically these days.
As my mother used to say - good manners costs nothing.

I'm guilty of some of these some of the time. But I am always contrite. Voting this Up and Interesting.
