Bealtaine an ghaoth a bhí riamh ag do dhroim.

Whether you are Irish, Scottish, Welsh, Gaelic, or an American, Celtic music is probably a part of your ancient heritage. Derived from stories passed from generations, Celtic music is based in Folklore and Poetry sung for entertainment. There are many divisions of true "Celtic Music" outside of "commercial" music by such artists as the Celtic Women.

Six Celtic nationalities constitute all that is "Celtic". The Q-Celtic nationalities are the Irish, Scottish, and Manx peoples. The P-Celtic groups are the Cornish, Bretons, and Welsh peoples. The Gaelic (Irish and Scottish) branch and the Brythonic (Breton and Welsh) group differentiate by an extended range of Irish and Scottish melodies and the closed range of Breton and Welsh melodies (often reduced to a half-octave), and by the frequent use of the pure pentatonic scale in Gaelic music.

Thanks for the list! I absolutely love celtic music and I have The Clannad's entire collection. I see they're missing from you list, but they are outstanding, in fact, Enya is/was their lead singer. She's fabulous and her voice is amazing singing native celtic songs.

Thanks again and voted up!

Hi there Vmartinez.. I LOVE this music and always have. It took me years to find the good stuff. Clannad is number 11. I appreciate you stopping by!

vmartinezwilson profile image

vmartinezwilson Level 5 Commenter 5 months ago

Sure enough, I'm not sure how I missed that! I missed Enya too. I feel silly now, but it was probably because your numbers skipped and I got confused! I'm going to have to listen to some Gaelic Storm, because I adore the soft tones and melodic beats.

My favorite Clannad CD is The Legend, which is the Robin Hood Soundtrack, though I have 3 of their greatest hits that include songs from The Last of the Mohicans soundrack.

Sorry for my silly confusion and I'll be listening to some of these groups. In fact, I'm going to put this as a favorite and start picking when I download some new CDs!

Hi VM,

This page is a little too much. If I started over I think I would have done 2 seperate hubs.. One on traditional and one on the drinking songs. I listen to the Last of the Mohicans almost daily. That theme song is the best song I have ever heard. It sounds Celtic, but it is rooted in English so I couldn't add it.

Gaelic Storm is probably the best. The do many shows on PBS also. I hope you find some goodies for your collection!

Thank you Cresentmoon! Loreena's talent is beyond this world. The Highway Man is one of her best. I was shocked to learn she was Canadian, but I think she is still legit. I love her song Dante's Prayer. I want that played at my funeral.. and Enya's Hope Has a Place.. Thanks for stopping by!

I read your name for the first time in the comment section in a hub by Feenix. I came to check your writings and I am happy I did. This is a great article with a great list of songs.

Many years back while tracing some of my family tree, I listend to some of this music and I was hooked. I cannot explain how I fell when I listen to it or how I fell about it. Kind of like when we were younger and listened to Led Zeplin for the first time.

I saw in your article you like heavy metal as well. Check out a band called the Kildares, they are from the Dallas area in Texas and they are a Gaelic metal band, there older songs were more metal than now but I think you may like the sound.

Up and awesome across the board. Look forward to reading more

PS. went to a Celtic Woman concert, its a beautiful show to see live

American View,

Thank you so much for your kind words. I have these same feelings of connectedness when I listen to this music. I am 1/4 Irish through my late Grandma. It is the part of me that keeps me in trouble.. It is a way I feel like I can honor her memory and impact on my life. I would LOVE a Celtic Woman concert.. How wonderful!

I will definatley listen to the Kildares. I am ALWAYS looking for new music. I love the Celtic metal.. Ensefirum is awesome. I am working on a metal list and a 90's Alternative List.

I will definatley check out your writings today. I can't keep up with you and Feenix and JT with the great political insight, but I love learning through you guys.

Hi Jenubouka.. thank you for stopping by! I love the Dropkick Murphys.. The song Kiss My Irish Arse' is fabulous. If I feel blue, I will listen to the drinking songs and cheer up. The dry, sarcastic irish humor is hard to beat.

This music is sooo beautiful. It is slightly related to folk and country. I would encourage you to listen Star of the County Down.. you many like it better than Keith Urban.. well its good, not sure if it is that good.. :)

Orlando sounds appealing. Are you close to Disney? That would be a great retirement destination.

Hi, this was great, I didn't realise who Loreena was but I have loads of cds of her music, I have a friend who downloads them for me! lol! I listen to them but never realised who sang them! one thing I would like to add is that most people don't realise that the South of England was mainly celtic as well, for example Bodecea our greatest Celtic queen, came from the south east of England, so most of the south down here is celtic. I love the music, I have it playing most nights, great stuff! cheers nell

Thanks for sharing this list Tammyswallow, I really love and enjoy listening to Celtic music. I have about a third of the songs listed in your hub, and they are definitely excellent choices. This means I need to start looking for the other ones on your list. One of my favorites is "Song for Ireland," truly beautiful. Of course, there's also "Danny Boy," my husband's favorite who could play it over and over again. He would sing that to our son when he was an infant to put him back to sleep when he would wake up in the middle of the night.

I remember the chieftains from when I was kid in London.

The Irish rebel songs were always on the record player.

I liked the way you laid out the different groupings of Celts, from Breton in the south to Scotland in the north and the Appalachian connections.

The Irish in the middle and don't forget the Welsh and Cornish or we will never hear the end of it lol.

Dolly Parton always says her music came from the Scots Irish of Appalachia.

I can hear it when I listen to her guitar pickers.

Great hub Tammy I learned something new and the images are stunning too.
