There's a coffee war going on up here in Canada so McDonald's occasionally offers free small coffee. I take full advantage of their generous offer.
Everyone.. I the United States.. Burger King resturaunts will be giving away free fries this Friday 12/16.. They have a new receipie. Great snack for FREE while you are out doing your Christmas Shopping.
Fortunately the items for a dollar or less are so close to a dollar in price that the Treasury Dept. doesn't lose money from the wear and tear on the change in coins....unless, of course, you still carry coins to pay for such things. ;>)

Ramsa- my Dollar Tree sells men's flannel shirts and sweatshirts, but they are hard to come by because they sell out so fast. They are roughly made, but anyone who can sew can reinforce the seams and buttons. I want free coffee...mmmm...

That is a good point.. Ebay sells the most wonderful clothing and stuff from China for PENNIES.. The items are so well made. It is tempting to buy these items, but I am afraid it will hurt those in the USA who are already loosing jobs because they can't compete with those prices. I agree with you on the Fries Sunshine.. I have never got the burnt little fry nubs at Burger King.. I hate that about McDondalds. I hope Burger King won't try to turn in McDonalds.. They were already great to me.

As ejacksonberg mentions - challenging economic times call for creative penny pinching, but some of the dollar finds are great in a pinch - like running to the neighborhood Dollar Tree over a supermarket - but I find some of the dollar items not worth the dollar. Like batteries, dryer sheets and razors, I will get a longer lifespan by spending a few more cents for the supermarket store brand than the dollar version.
But - with that being said - as over indulgence comes to an end, the dollar menu items at Wendy's, Burger King, McDonald's, do bring portion control front and center again.
Tammy - this was a very creative post - along with some very interesting comments and replies.

Thank you for your response Shiela! I agree, some dollar items can be "junky" and cluttersome. Dollar razors are a very bad idea. I do think it is smarter to pay less for throw away items such as toilet paper, tin foil, etc.. Many of the dollar items we find in stores are actually not all junky (with the exception of the batteries.. lol..)but are overstock items from other countries. I think like you and I don't skimp on things like dryer sheets and laundry and dish detergent. They just don't cut it. You have some very good thoughts. Thank you for your visit!

Right, creativity with how to budget and spend our dollars was a lost art during the 80's. One of my favorite scenes from "Whose Wedding is it Anyway" was when the wedding planner was on one of her tightest budgets ever and created the center pieces all with finds from the dollar store. Pretty darn creative.
How about getting even more creative - is it possible to plan a free "stay-cation" with items from the dollar store? Like a picnic to the State Park with chips, soda, bologna, cheese and bread?
Let's get creative - what else could you plan from the dollar store besides a picnic and wedding center pieces?
I guess I shouldn't limit it to the dollar store - not with all of those dollar menus out there.
Dollar Store - Dollar Menus - where else and what else can you get for a dollar? Can you still go see a movie for a dollar?
And I thought you couldn't get much for a dollar. Wish we had a dollar tree. I know that there are 99-cent stores but the items aren't 99 cents any more they're more like $1.29. Good hub!

There are many creative ideas we can come up with for $1.00 items from designing baby items, making gift baskets of personal care items, making doll clothes from scraps of fabric, there is lots of fun to be had with a $1. Thank you for reading. Most of these items are purchaseable online, but very high shipping costs are unavoidable in this case. Taxes really raise costs to. It would be neat to compare this list with a list of items available from the 1970's and 1980's to see the price of inflation!

liked this...there are many things we can still get for 100 pennies...when i was a wee bit of a girl, i could get several bags full of candy for a dollar...a dollar was a lot of money to me then...still is...actually. the
dollar stores, and there are many varieties of those, are a boon to shoppers...if you shop carefully...inspect before you buy, you can make out like a bandit.
I liked this so much I am going to print it and keep it handy for the next time I need a lot of inexpensive items.

Thanks for the hub, Tammy. With income going down, I've found my way to the Dollar Store. I've also found that my list of what I can do without is much longer. The Dollar Store is someplace to walk into with hyper alertness and your purse firmly closed. I found that out the first time I tried to save money there. What a joke on me!

This was a great hub, I have voted it up. I thought I would have a look at what I could find for a dollar as that is about the price of a can of drink here. Found an iPhone case I liked for $0.98 and then paid $14.99 air shipping. So a slight failure by me there! (Didn't check ebay, until too late lol) - Great idea for an article Tammy. I cracked up when I reread the list and compared one to the next. I'm a middle school teacher who shops at the dollar stores for incentives. Tween think they are mature but you should see them SQUEAL in delight with toys.

Love this list! Just saw this hub and loved reading your list. Gotta love bargain shopping. This is a great way to find things for stocking stuffers, Operation Christmas child boxes, and so many other things. I did a hub on "shopping for free" that has to do with a fun website you might want to check out. The website's kinda like ebay but you buy and sell using credits so everything is free. I love it. Last things I bought at the dollar store that I actually used: pack of 50 envelopes, address labels for my printer, a pack of pencils, and coloring books for my kids, a USB cable. All 1$ ea!
